There are 16 Access Cards used in the game. However, they are designed with a triple encrypted fractal data string - the cards mutate in synch with each other over 50,000 times a second, making them nearly impossible to counterfeit. Used by dragging through a card slot reader, these cards appear deceptively low-tech. The Access Cards are needed as a consequence of a state of martial law declared by Sergeant Melanie Bronson, which led to all primary sub-sectors of the ship locked down. Most Access Cards are found on the corpses of dead crew members, but some Cards are lying on the ground and in niches or found among the contents of various desks. There are several Access Cards of different types scattered throughout the Von Braunand UNN Rickenbacker that are needed to open locked doors. They are used to gain admission to certain areas and systems that are otherwise inacessible.

Soldier proceeds there to reach the UNN Rickenbacker and stop the Many.Access Cards are key items in System Shock 2. After soldier sends off the transmission and completes the objectives on the Operations Deck, XERXES is sufficiently powerless, allowing SHODAN to unlock the elevator to the Command Deck. At the Athletics he restores local power and reaches the transmitting device. While in the Quarters, he also finds a keycard giving him access to the Athletic Sector. Soldier discovers that the code is hidden within the contents of the Art Terminals scattered throughout the Recreation Deck in the Mall, Garden and the Crew Quarters. Unfortunately, the transmitter is powered down and needs a code to be activated. There, a transmission device has been set up by the members of the Resistance, including Enrique Cortez and Marie Delacroix. SHODAN informs soldier that to deprive XERXES of any further power, he will have to send a warning signal to Earth from the Athletic Sector.
